 is a common condition that plagues many people each night. About one out of eight adults who have trouble sleeping reach for sleep aids to try to find relief.

Suvorexant is a sleep medication designed to treat insomnia. This medication, sold under the brand name Belsomra, was officially approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as an insomnia therapy in 2014.

 It can be taken by people who have a hard time getting to sleep or staying asleep.

This medication may help some people sleep more soundly. However, it can also lead to side effects that can occasionally be serious. It’s important to know the benefits and risks, as well as other treatment options, before taking suvorexant.

There are many processes in the brain that help control wakefulness and sleepiness. One of these processes involves orexins — molecules that activate neurons in the brain that make you feel more awake.

Suvorexant is a type of medication called a dual orexin receptor antagonist or DORA. These medications block orexins from interacting with their target neurons. This helps prevent wakeful processes from being turned on in the brain, shifting the balance towards sleepiness.

Clinical studies have found that suvorexant can help improve various measures of sleep, although these improvements are sometimes minor. Research has found that after using the drug regularly, study participants have seen the following effects:

They fall asleep more quickly — different studies found that people got to sleep about 8 to 13 minutes sooner after using the drug, compared to people using a placebo (sugar pill)

They spend more time asleep — people using suvorexant were asleep for 10 to 25 minutes longer each night, compared to those taking a placebo

They say that they feel they got a better night’s sleep

There haven’t been any studies that have directly compared suvorexant to other sleep aids, so it’s not clear whether this medication is more or less effective than other options.

Suvorexant comes in tablets containing 5, 10, 15, or 20 mg dosages. When you first start taking this medication, your doctor will likely prescribe a low dose — often 10 mg. If this doesn’t help, they may give you a higher dose, although taking more can lead to worse side effects.

Doctors will usually instruct you to take suvorexant once per day. It should be taken within 30 minutes of when you want to go to sleep. Suvorexant works more quickly if it’s taken on an empty stomach, so you may want to make sure to finish eating dinner a couple of hours before bedtime.

Always follow your doctor’s instructions when taking suvorexant. If their recommendations aren’t clear, ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain.

Some sleep medications can lead to dependence — they make you feel like you have to keep using the drugs in order to sleep. People may also be tempted to abuse drugs and use them too often or at a higher dose than recommended. Suvorexant can sometimes lead to abuse, although this is not too common. About

Ambien helps encourage sleep. This drug boosts a neurotransmitter  that calms down processes in the brain, making them less active and helping you feel more relaxed and sleepy.

People with chronic (ongoing) insomnia may experience higher-quality sleep after taking this medication. Additionally, Ambien can help people with occasional insomnia get to sleep more quickly and stay asleep longer before waking up.

 However, it doesn’t usually seem to help people wake up fewer times throughout the night.

Some studies have found that people who take Ambien feel less tired and can concentrate better the next morning.

 On the other hand, other research has shown that high doses of the medication can lead to higher levels of drowsiness the day after.

Ambien has only been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a short-term insomnia treatment. 

It is not meant to be used for longer periods of time

There are multiple forms of zolpidem. One tablet, simply called Ambien, is swallowed by mouth. It works quickly to put you to sleep. The other oral tablet, called Ambien CR, works over a longer time period — one layer makes you sleepy very quickly, while the next layer works more slowly to make you drowsy throughout the night.

There are also forms of zolpidem that are taken in other ways. Zolpimist is a liquid that is sprayed into the mouth, while Edluar and Intermezzo are both tablets that dissolve after being placed underneath your tongue.

Most of these forms of medication are taken once a day before you go to bed. However, Intermezzo is taken if you wake up in the middle of the night and can’t get back to sleep.

When using zolpidem tablets, your doctor will usually recommend a dosage of 5 to 10 mg per day.

Make sure to only use your prescribed dose, since it is possible to overdose on Ambien

After taking Ambien, Zolpimist, or Edluar, plan to stay in bed at least seven hours. If you know you won’t be in bed that long, it is not recommended that yout take the medication.

. It often becomes less effective over time, making people feel like they need to take a higher dose than prescribed. Your body can also become so used to Ambien that you can no longer go to sleep without it.

Ambien is only meant to be a temporary solution to insomnia, used for a day or two. It is not recommended that you use itfor more than two weeks unless your doctor tells you 

Talk to your doctor before you stop using Ambien. You may have to gradually decrease your dose. If you stop using it suddenly, you could develop symptoms of withdrawal such as stomach cramps, feelings of shakiness, nausea, sweating, panic attacks, or uncontrollable crying.

Digestive symptoms such as nausea, heartburn, constipation, or diarrhea

Pain, numbness, or a feeling of “pins and needles” in your arms or legs

Tell your doctor if you notice any changes after starting Ambien. Get immediate medical assistance if you develop hives, swelling, itching, breathing problems, yellow skin or eyes, chest pain, or blurry vision.

Alcohol should not be mixed with Ambien or other forms of zolpidem

. You may experience worsened side effects when you take this drug while drinking.

Additionally, using Ambien along with alcohol or drugs may cause you to experience hallucinations or start acting strangely.

Is Ambien the Best Treatment for Insomnia?

Because Ambien often causes problems like dependence and withdrawal, and can be difficult to use safely, doctors typically first recommend other solutions for sleeping troubles.

 (CBT-I) as a first insomnia treatment option.10 During CBT-I, a specialist helps guide you in examining and changing your beliefs, behaviors, and feelings surrounding sleep. This treatment has helped many people leave their insomnia behind.

Research has found that CBT-I is just as effective as sleeping pills
